Real Hiphop out in Hawaii is either underground or totally non-existent because it is just not felt as a force to be reckoned with out here. I ain't feelin' it. In order for people like me to get some of that, we always gotta be checkin' what peops on the "mainland" is doin'.
Yeah we have clubs and imitator DJs and MCs (if you can call'em that) but hardly any originators. They want to talk about "gangsta" shit and "getting paid" when neither of those things happen in this state (the latter happens mainly in the tourism industry, almost exclusively).
All I'm sayin' is that it is not authentic out here or it is weak. It's not getting respected or represented properly. Probably because it's not the native culture or just not studied but taken more on face value. They see it on tv and don't consider Hiphop as actually being someone else's culture, which is in actuality, part of the larger contemporary African-American culture.
I'm also originally a South Side Chicago native (Hyde Park, baybeh!) so I know the real when I see and hear it. Common Sense, I felt you from since "Soul by the Pound (video)." Man, I got all your albums, sheeee... Forever the tightest MC, that you are. I don't know if you've ever done shows out here in the "Aloha State" but if not, yo, you gotta' just come on down.
(I was shocked one day when they actually played your recent cut "The Light" on the radio, in a DJ mix of sorts. I think they recongnizin'.)

THE INNOCENTBOY`S LYRICAL SKILLZ
o O ooO o O ooO o O ooO o O ooO o O ooO
* actually, i don`t emcee (i'm a visual artist) so i guess i will call this a "poem", no wait ... "spoken word" sounds better)
** like i said, i`m not an emcee but this goes out to the no-name rechargable AA batteries that kept my walkman going ... and especially to all us skinny fukks that play too much video games and are eagerly awaiting for someone we know to buy a PlayStation 2.
*** WARNING!!! ... you will understand this poem better if you've played the following video games:
-super Mario bros. for old 8-bit NES
-contra for old 8-bit NES
-super Mario Kart for SNES
-Goldeneye 007 for Nintendo 64
-Street Fighter II
-NBA Jam
TITLE: "in my Video Game past"
WRITTEN BY: steltBoma a.k.a. innocentboy a.k.a. Willie Upshaw a.k.a. Billy the kid a.k.a. silentBill a.k.a. Liu Kang a.k.a. Kang the blue faced timetraveller (from the Avenger's and Fantastic 4 comics)
b.t.bbt.b.t.bbt.b.t.bbt.b.t.bbt.b.t.bbt.b.t.bbt.b.t.bby
some silent stereo sound for both me and you,
Once upon a time Super Mario entered the sewers of level 1-2,
he found that koopa troopa turtles came in all colours each utilizing a different kind of shell,
down the pit silentBill fell,
in order to tell,
his friend, player 2 controlling Luigi to go and have some fun,
at the end of the level 1-2 some rules broke and Luigi entered level -1,
smoking herbals in sewer pipes and sewer bongs,
Luigi found the warp zone,
all he lost was his lungs,
like the "invisible Guile handcuffs" cheat,
used to break people`s necks,
i ain't old but a lot these kids don`t know about that,
that`s why i ask the true Commadore 64 gamers to flex:
thier rowdy rowdy piper ripped old school hat.
every teacher is a student,
every student is a teacher,
this is called "chain reactions" and it allows newbies to unlock "NBA jam`s" big head feature
but i admit, i didn`t always play video games this way,
i've broken 2 controllers playing 16-bit Super Mario Kart because i couldn`t control my rage,
lost my hand plus i fukkin went insane,
Donkey Kong and muddafukkin` bananas pissed me off so i had to light up another J,
put in 8-bit Contra,
fave gun?
spread gun.
classic code: up, up, down, down,
extra lives yeah now we playin'
no more foolin` around,
but classic NES is in a past that i`m miserably madly missing,
so let`s take it from 1-button Atari to Ninendo 64's 3-D polygon vision:
cabless TV,
17"
a gift from a friend,
made in Japan,
less than 8 channels,
but handled,
channel #3,
so we,
felt guilty,
if we weren`t playin`
Goldeneye64 plus,
of course i smoked another dime,
007 and Baren Samedi were the only strong when i was armed with my RC-P9,
in my prime,
i always shut out all of you no matter what the fukking time,
i`m talking the ones getting thier quarters changed from tiny-@$$ pinched dimes,
i learned versatility,
thus learned the ability,
to realign and combine,
the joystick with the left and right side ...
yellow buttons to get the speed meter running extra high,
you even had the gernade launcher,
chasing me and you were following close behind,
i even let you keep the radar cheat on and you had almost infinite lives,
but i could run backwards so now you were in for a surprise,
i picked up the silenced-PP7 from when i killed you and broke the 3-3 tie,
but the score`s past 9-9,
and the game is up to 10,
next kill wins and the loser goes into the Window`s recycle bin,
the level was called Complex,
so i ran to the room with the red lights,
grabbed body armour and said, "i ain`t going out with-out a fight",
paused the game, rolled a spliff,
and from there flicked another light,
said, "let`s do this sh!t"
so "plip!", "plip!", "plip",
PP7 shots to your dikk,
they BOOM
this asian got blown to,
smithereans,
but i re-incarnated and burned you with a "HA-DOOOOOOOO-KEEN!!!"
As Ken Masters,
always waiting to meet his partner Ryu,
dressed in white,
counting on constant practice to improve,
ready to lose and re-learn so Ken could gain new moves,
`cause there`s always someone better than you in Street Fighter II.
this is what i`ve learned,
where fate did take..
me through joy and pain,
and sunshine and rain,
drawing pictures so that i may one day gain more face,
trying to help others but back firing and helping my own brain.
so everytime you see an innocent visual drawn by me,
everytime you drop Visine in the tools that you use to see,
everytime you see a skinny chink playing video games,
everytime you see Super Mario battle koopa troopas on your TV screen,
everytime you get too drunk and therefore lose your keys,
everytime you see a traffic light telling you when to A or Z,
everytime you hit rewind on your tape player,
(be it hiphop, jungle, trance or a church choir),
every time you get a new bullsh!t job that makes you tired,
every time you smoke a last minute spliff, arrive late and get fired,
every time you inspect like deck to catch an intelligent liar,
everytime to you listen to rapping and thus become inspired,
for every time that you`re happy,
and every time that you`re sad,
when your girl gets pregnant think of silentBill`s past,
read the words silentBill spits visually at the rate of over 1000 words at a time,
read it again when Sherlock Homeboy solves another corporate crime,
and last but not least,
when we on our death bed,
remember silentBill`s written PP7 shots to your dikk-head.

It seems like hip-hop gets more and more splitted in two styles; nonsense-ego-gangsta-rap and the conscious style. One style is governt by ignorance while the other truly grows to the light, the oneness of all creation.
The soldiers on the battlefield between darkness and light are many, but Common stands in the frontline of God`s peole, among with Lauryn Hill, Mos Def or The Roots.
Their influences on peole all over the world is huge, `cause we all search for reasons or confirmations in our believes. It`s necessary to feel that we`re not alone, that there are still some conscious man on this planet.
And, like Bob Marley said, darkness must among the light!!!
Give thanx and praises to The Most High and keep on fightin`with our positive vibes! GOD BLESS.

For a long time, I've been listening to such artists as Jay-Z, DMX, and many others. I thought it was the best out there until I stopped listening to the beats and listening to the words and when I listened to the words, rap changed in my eyes forever. Seems nowadays, the only rap you hear about is I'll kill you, I have so much money, I have this and I have that. What did you have before you got into the business? But with you and MosDef, there's so much more and that's a relief. It's good to hear words that enrich the mind. Keep doing what you're doing and continue in the future because you will ALWAYS have my total support.

I'd like to thankyou for your soulful, jazzy beats and superb lyrical skills. Its the likes of common, mos def and talib kweli etc who are making real hiphop. Not like cashmoney/ruffriders etc (which is gansta rap - not hiphop) who are calling themselves hiphop and giving this industry the completely wrong message.
P.S the new album's excellent.

Yo, this is Danny Salaam again. The last piece I wrote was inspired by the event I witnessed the night before. Me and my blood Marcos went to see the Clipps play the Raptors Wednesday night, March 8th here in Los Angeles. Before the game started, we were looking for photo film on the ground level at the Staple Center. We became frustrated when we couldn't find a store selling it, so we went to the restroom real quick cuz the game was about to start. Out of no where, just when I was grabbing my sweater before it fell off my arms, this tall ligth-skin dude with an Indiana Jones hat and cool jacket made out of like rope or something, bumped into me pretty heavily. I almost did drop my sweater and said "my badd." The dude kind of laughed apologetically too and said "oh, I'm sorry." I kind of recognized the voice, but never thought it would be who it turned out to be. My boy was like, "Hey fool, that's Common!!" I turned around and right before my eyes, Lonny Lynn was right there. I could not believe my eyes, but it was him. I played it out cool with Marcos and just stood there waiting for him. First thing I said was, "How you doing man, it's a pleasure seeing you." Common said "yo, wassup man? How you guys doing?" while he was washing his hands. Me and my boy let him know that we had been waiting for his "Like Water 4 Chocolate" album for the longest time. He said "I know, I know, it's been late, it is late now." Then I said, "YO, tell Mos Def and Talib Kweli that they got much love out here in the West, and to just keep it up and keep it going." He said "One luv to you guys as well, I appreciate it a lot." Then I got his autograph on my ticket. Afterwards, me and Marcos kept on trippin' through the whole game, Vince Carter did not even top the moment, until the fourth quarter with a monstrous jam, which Common missed cuz he left the game early. This night will probably be engraved in our minds for a long time. I wanna say peace to Lonnie Lynn, my favorite MC, and thanx for not being a stuck up Kat or whatever. I'm looking forward to your joining the D'angelo tour like you mentioned to us as well. Peace brotha, and keep going til u say fuck it!
DS.

What's up, I would just like to comment on the appearance
of Common on the Black Star song Respiration. I personally think that the song and the video was dope. Common and Black
Star shows that, you don't need a big budget to make a dope video. They keep it real and straight to the street. I'm
tired of hearing about Rolexes, money, hoes, and clothes.
I want to hear more about life in the streets of the "Concrete Jungle" as well as the studio. Common to me brings more of a reality into the Hip Hop scene. I can give
him so much praise over the song" One-Nine-Nine-Nine" that
features Sadat X. I love the lyrics and the beat was dope.
Not to mention the video, that thing was dope. I have that video and song in my Hip Hop archives. I like the message
and the context that the song and the video had to offer.
I also would like to thank common for not selling out and going commercial. That is all Hip Hop fans need to see nowadays is, another video with females dancing around. What ever happened to showing the DJ in the video doing his
thing. What ever happened to the videos that are filmed on the streets and in the studios. Common does all these things. Keep it up Common I'm trusting you, Black Star and the rest of the Rawkus family to lead the real Hip Hop through the Millenium. I can't wait until you drop another
album or a dope LP. When you do let me know ahead of time
so I can bug the nearest record joint for the shipment and release date. Keep it real as always. Peace out.

Peace to the King and Queens who know what righteous livin' is all about. I just wanted to make a brief but detailed comment on the Hip Hop era. I think it's real bogus to have to succumb to a commercial ass setting in order to sell records. Hip hop is a way of life not a way to make paer. If the out come is fame and fortune it should be because of righteous tendencies not because of shady business. I really believe Common and L-Boogie are two prophets delivering the creators message in a way that we, as generation x can relate to. Peace B Still

First off, Common you will have your time to shine! You have never forgoten where you come from ( The GOLDEN RULE ) and you've always represented Hip Hop in the most positive way I have ever witnessed. This culture is so powerful in the hands of its beholders, and you'ved the eyes of the blind to see how real all this is. I highly anticipate any verse you spit on any album in the stores. Common,
First, just let me say that I am a big fan of yours. Now, YOu seem to be about the upliftment of your people, which is good, but I see one fault in what you do. On "1-9-9-9" you say "...I roll with squads, called the Gods..." If you are rollin' with the GOD's they why do you refer to your people and use the word nigga so much? Are you not being a tad contradictory?
None the less, keep makin' good music.
Peace

Hi everyone,
I just want to say. I am glad to see real MCs like Common out there. Hip Hop is about culture, not about being a player or pimp. Common is a gentleman and a real intelligent person. He should be praised by the Hip Hop community all around. I hope he never goes mainstream like most of these fakers do now. I have been giving him his respect and due since he dropped Can I Borrow A Dollar?.Common.....the way Hip Hop is today....it will take a long time before it makes sense. Hip Hop will never be great again like it once was if this bulls--- it portrays now doesn't stop.Thank you.

I've recently read an article that has pissed me off in "One
World" magazine that speaks about how hip hop has
recently merged with pornagraphy. What pissed me off was that the author of the article was talking about it like it
is the best thing that has ever happened to hip hop. In the last two years the quality of hip hop music has dropped
steadily and after reading this article and monitoring it's increase in mainstream popularity it's become apparent that
rap music is dying in the hands of the devil( the evil that men do). While my contribution to the rap game continues to be suppressed due to content and lack of nonsense, I
would like to express props due to you for being strong enough to keep dropping soulful sh*t , for performing G.O.D. in cali despite the mellow tempo, and stepping up to your responsibility as a entertainer. Your effort does not go unnoticed and I like many on the westcoast eagerly await your next release.

when people talk about hip hop many think of new york. but untill recently the only place i ever viewed it was at home in chicago. from the graf crews of j4f,uac,cya,ufg,thc,abc,sb,aerosoul. breaking crews of the brickheads, phase2,jmc. djs like tone b. nimble,eq,third rail, cube. mcs like storytellas, uphonics, rhyme fest, isa, and of course you. from the early days of can i borrow a dollar i was hooked. you brought what the rest of the world needed to see chicagos place on the map. i can go on for days about all the people i met and watched but thats not what im getting into. hip hop is about community. through its 4 elements we build and grow. chicago i believe has the tightest knit of underground dedication. ive been to philly, nyc, toronto, montreal, jersy,dc,bmore, and japan to name a few. and the place that feels at home is chi. not because its home but because thats where its at.meeting many mcs, djs, breakers, and grafers the only place where people acted down to earth about what they did was chi. thanks for all the hits, chill rob aka dr spel

THE ANTI-NIGGA MACHINE PETITION
By: Adisa Banjoko
Since 1970, when most people believe the subculture of Hip Hop began, there has always been the essence of "the struggle". As Hip Hop grew to become a global
phenomenon, it was the essence of "the struggle" that attracted many people to it. Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, Kam, Poor Righteous Teachers, X -Clan and others served as a catalyst in showing how Hip Hop could be used as a teaching tool for the future young generations.
As Hip Hop continues to expand, the essence of "the struggle" has been pushed to the wayside by corporations who have no initial love or respect for the art.
For them, the bottom line has become money. And while knowledge and wisdom once ruled Hip Hop, today ignorance and disrespect have taken over. We have no standards as a loosely based community.
Hence, the movement of justice and universal respect within Hip Hop has all but died. To date, no politician has ever lost office because the people within the Hip Hop community voted him/her out. No bills have been passed because the people within Hip Hop decided something MUST be done about this or that situation. No political prisoners have been freed because of Hip Hop rally's.
It is time for us to take a step my friends. The ANTI-NIGGA MACHINE is a petition that will be delivered to the record companies of America and the world telling them to no longer release music with the words nigga/nigger and bitch in
them. This is not a witch hunt. It is a voluntary effort to better the Hip hop community from within. By signing this document you promise to remove the word nigga/nigger, and bitch (basically a feminine version of nigger) out of your
vocabulary.
As well, you are saying that starting in the year 2000, you will not support record labels or radio stations or print media that celebrates artists who speak like that to our children. We encourage independent and major label owners and artists to sign this document as well. The words nigga/nigger and bitch is disrespectful to all African men and women.
It's a small step. But by signing this you are stepping forward into the future with a clean slate, a new dignity and a new sense of cultural pride and respect. Lets give the children of the next generation a new level of self esteem. Regardless of your race if you truly love Hip Hop culture, sign below and lets move into the future together.
Send your signature of approval to ironblacklion
The signatures will be presented to presidents of record companies and media outlets within 30 days.
Please include your name, occupation and age. Thank you.

Common,
I would like to thank you for the great beats and rhymes and for keeping REAL hip hop alive and well! It's also a relief to see a rapper who ISN'T concerned with east coast/west coast bullshit. Your music is as enlightening as it is dope! Thank you again for what you do for hip hop.

I'm also still feeling the "Love of My Life" W/ The Roots which was one of the tracks that make "Things Fall Apart" on all these wack, unoriginal, sub-par album making, and 100 hundred special guesting rap niggas just fold and throw the towel.

OH NO, NOT ANOTHER LOSER WHO WANTS COMMON TO HEAR HIM RAP
How can I get Common to check out what I got? If he ain't too busy (which I know is fucking rare for a rap artist) I'd like for him to give my lyrics an ear. I'm from the Northside of Chicago and I feel as a representative of Chicago, Common should try to put other Chicago acts on the map. Gots to give Common his props. You are keeping it on the creative vibe that we need more of in Hip-Hop. You're being conscious, teaching, and keeping it true to the roots of Hip-Hop. Keep doing your thang, and I love the joints you've done lately with Sadat, The Roots, and Black Star. That 1-9-9-9 joint is the shit! Much love, you's the man.

I think that it is time for more emcees to come out like Common , The Roots, and other hip-hop artists that are not in the game just for the money. If they were not making money, I think these brothers would still be rapping some where in Philly, NY, or where ever. I hope that they do not lose sight on the important thing here, and that is the message that they send out to young people looking up to them. Yeah, I know that they may not want to be role models, but once you are in the spot light, everybody notices what you say, wear, shit, even what you eat. So I hope that they watch what they say because we black folks need a role models. I wish somebody would take the responsibilty and try to lead our young black youth to self righteousness. Peace yall.

"renaissance of hip-hop attacking our essence after 29 years of struggling be breathing" this should be a rhyme spoken like Aphrikan rebirth. commercial act has invaded the phoenix art which was conceived by pioneer individuals. i reside in South Aphrika, Gauteng a.k.a Jo'burg, the art is developing in my continent. but i am here to lay my concern earthly, global hip-hop heads we should intergrate and make sure that commercial venom doesnt not inject this innocent offspring. the art form should empower universal intellects, teach children 'bout the realness and respect. if these principles can be taken to recognition, ngempela the artform will survive into the millenium century. we should be grateful after 20 years when looking back and pet our shoulders, witnessing at what we have created. if ordinary heads like me and can decline arrogance, definetly regration wont be there. we should utilize the legend hip hop law: YOU EITHER COME INDIGENOUS OR YOU DONT COME AT ALL" if it can be used, even those subhuman heads will halt when trying to invade the united art form. i am the earth head, imitation has been an old trade like prostitution, if we as tighten hard like war of jihaad, and teach newly recruits and offsprings 'bout true official teaching of hip-hop, surely misconception will not sight in the senses of old generation.

First of all i gotta give respect to Common for his accomplishments. He was one of the first (if not thee first) emcee to put Chicago on the map and reign as one of the greatest of all time. The one thing i like most about Com is his originality, in terms of beats, style, lyrics and subject matter. I like how each song has a different message and he addresses issues many choose to leave untouched, like "Retrospect for Life" and the joint with Goodie Mob (i forget the name). The way he flows sounds like a hybrid of rap and poetry, every single line has meaning and he doesn't use words to fill space in a line, or to make it rhyme with the previous line.
Now that i said what i gotta say, if there are any headz out there that are on that graff art, poetry and hip hop tip then hit up my website at

I just wanted to hit the website up to let Common know, you still doing your thing in 1999. Your work on the Roots is tight as hell, and I'm looking forward to the SoundBombing II release. 1999 and Like They Used To Say are two of the tightest tracks I've heard this year. Big up to Hi-Tek and Dug Infinite on the production, those tracks are just bumping and mad ORIGINAL.
Common, when can the people expect a new Lp from you?
And also how can a brother with tight material make it into the production game? Can I get a few tips. There's a lot of talent in the ATL.
Stay peace and keep on doing what you doing in this rap game.
PEACE!!!!!!!

While others from NY constantly talk about "CREAM" and "John Blazin" , ya'll use your mind and challenge us to take in the music. I'm from the south and I've always supported "purists" like Common, Tribe,Outkast,Goodie, Roots,Mos Def, etc. If it weren't for ya'll's creativity and cleverness, this culture would have drowned in it's own bullsh*t.

Because of Common's song "I used to love H.E.R." I was able to help my cousin introduce her biogty white teacher to the world of hiphop through this timeless song. The first time i heard this song by common i fell in love. I was tricked, thinking it was about a girl, and I loved when he said "It's hip-hop.." I fell in love with that song and deeper into him. The way common flows and the way his words come together send me to a peace of mind. I want to be there in a room with him and just listen to him vibe all day. His words makes so much sense and they actually have a meaning and an impact when you hear them. I wish he could be sitting her telling me his heart the way he does in his music. I think he is a true Lyrical Genius and I am in love. He would have to be my most favorite rapper becaue his style is too deep to be touched and his lyrics are to strong to be broken down. Common (Sense) makes just that and I love him the more each day and in each song-retrospection of life-blows me away. You will not find my living area without a photgraph, poster and CD in any one room.
I love him. He is a force to be reckoned with and every one needs to hear his work especially those doubter of the culture HIP HOP- they really need to hear I used to love H.E.R.
Thats is all that I have to say-

Yo, I think that that hip-hop is in great need of a super group. It would be bangin to see Common, Black Thought, Guru, and Ras Kass all team up with Primo on the beats. I know this would be hard to do seein' as how everyone is busy and all, but the main stream doesn't recognize real hip-hop at all. This project would definently give it recognition and show them that there are other things that can be discussed in rhyme other than blunts, beer, who got bucked, and who got the most loot.
P.S. When the phuk is Common's new joint comin'! I'm thirsty!

Definetly want to use this forum to comment on 98. This year has been and enlightenment for myself as a follower of the movement and culture we call hip hop. In this year as a 16 year old I learned to unite my quest for knowledge of self with my quest to define my life through the hip hop culture. I hope that 1998 had a similar effect on all followers. But before celebrating the accomplishments of this year, I look to 99 and the turn of the millenium. We as a people are going to be continued to be challenged by ignorance and the offsprings of it. So my message to to all heads is maintain composure and stay true to self, discover who you are and use all knowledge obtained to better those who surround you and are like yourselves.

Yo, common what's the deal with that sprite commercial? I don't get it.
It seems like the commercial is made to enlight people about the concealed beauty and art of Hiphop.
But, Sprite as a company seems mad commercial to me. YO common...I've been diggin your beats ever since you blasted on the scene; and you've been a great inspiration to me. Have you defied your own legacy from all three albums; or are you still working for the continuation of this great art?

The fact that most mental mindsets are at ground zero like the equator,
motivates me to be an educator, not a playa hater, though part-time debater./
For example,/
I'm skeptical at the fact that many rappers claim the money source of their pockets is ample- and thats just a sample./
Of the ongoing; falsification, thats bossin' this nation,/
got me people flossin' and racin', crossin' and 2 facin'.../
each other; but I choose to elevate like Outkast,
spiritually energizin' myself, to ensure myself, I'll out last./
All negative people, and negative mindsets,/
negative theories, neagtive ideologies, and negative blind bets./
On my destruction; knowin' that being a man is a big role,/
Common said "315 dolars ain't worth your soul!"/
But thats hard to realize, when you feel you have no self worth,/
when the world negatively portrays black- as the dirtiest thing on earth./
I don't have a lot, just a little sense which enables me to see clear,/
lest backtrack- take out the slave trade- would black folk still be here?/
Food for thought,/
something to have my mind, occupied, contructively on instead of being in this game- getting caught.../
...up, like jumping a fence and getting your crotch snagged at the top,/
we should concentrate on uplifting, not tearing down hip-hop!/

Brothers and sisters...where are all the heads at? I'm from the north suburbs of Chicago, and I'm looking to start something. I said that it was time to unify ourselves, and I want to take steps to do that. I've seen many young'uns who were enamored with Hip Hop, and B-Boy in particular, fall to the way side because they simply didn't have any place to chill, to talk, to learn, to break. They instead fell to the gangs, to the drugs, to the dark side of humanity. Right now, I'm trying to change that. My idea is called the Break In theory, it should be a place, hopefully a gym or a hall, where anyone can come. It'll be on Wednesdays for just a couple hours. Just so that heads of all ages have a place to go, where they know they can break, converse, learn, and just chill. A place where they know that they won't be seen as trouble makers, but as part of a community that appreciates them. A place where they will feel safe, from the violence, from the pressure, from the regular routine many can't follow. I feel it is time for me to lead by example. So, why mention this? I need help. Hall rates are expensive, so If anyone has any connections to halls or gymnasiums, that contact would be greatly appreciated. And I need the word to spread that a safe haven exists, so any help flyering would be appreciated. This is a grass roots movement, and I'm the only money behind it, so for sure it will mean a lot of work. If you're willing to do something for your community, e-mail me at Eigth Anim Now is the time.

I have to say I'm in agreeance with Anim Majestic when he says that we need to bring unity in our hip hop culture. Because as a culture we are still just beginning and it is now the time to fortify our foundation so we can leave a soard of legacy for those of the generations to come. I feel as Anim Majestic, that the knowledgeable of our culture must use there knowledge to enlighten the youth like myself. People of my age (16), need influences, positive ones at that to guide us so when we reach a certain level of understanding we can guide others. Stay sound in mind, body and spirit, and give your part of yourself to the evolution of the culture.

Common,
I was walking down Broadway one day in NYC, at about 8th street, and I ran into Common. All I did was look at him and I guess the expression on my face was surprise because he just walked over and gave me a pound. It was just mad surprise to be meeting this brother who I really look up to.
And I told him this, I told him that he influenced me to rhyme, but it not just rhyming. And I'm not talking about producing either. What I meant to say was that he put me on to music. Good music. He showed me, through his albums, that music can be light and deep at the same time. And that you always have to review yourself, retrospect and introspect.

I think the main problem in hip-hop today is when hip hop heads are confronted with problems within in the culture they don't know how to handle them because a lot of heads don't understand the culture themselves. We got folks out there sayin they hip hop when they within themselves believe in some of the stereotypes hip-hop faces today. Like violence defines lyricism and now in the last few years riches and material things define the culture's lyricism. What this is causing is a line is being drawn. A line between rap and hip hop, in fact the line is drawn and people are standing on different sides now. On one side we got the commercial rap like Will Smith, Puff, Jermaine Dupri, and all of them. On the other side stands speakers for the culture: Mos Def, Common, Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang, and all of the MC's who don't represent Mis Conception like Talib Kweli said. But real heads realize this and the problem is the fake one's don't and still think they're hip hop when in essence they're not. These people are causing the downfall of the culture and real heads must rise and face this monster and eventually bring hip hop back to the lyricists, graf artists, break dancers, and just livers of the defining culture of minority America. Word.

My brothers and sisters, I hail from Chicago, my home town that I share with Common. I'm a B-Boy, and have been for sometime now. I just recently got some cash, and bought all the LPs that I always wanted, and I got my hands (finally!) on Commons latest. I was taken back at the pure progressiveness of the album. Each track touched me, and continues to elevate me. It has been brought to the forefront of my mind, through my study, experience, and recent conversations with hip hop heads in the community, that it has been long due to unify ourselves. We are entering a new stage in our journey, where the young ones who discover hip hop are unwittingly falling into the trap of not understanding what they are discovering. Now I'm not the one to define hip hop, and I doubt anyone who will try to generalize something so closely related to each and every individual who claims it, but I do not hesitate to clear what hip hop isn't. Ironically, what it isn't is what many of the shorties believe it to be. From hip hop being a style of music to hip hop being about the money and the power. It is time that the older (and wiser) members who are united under the hip hop banner begin to educate those who discover it. It is time to realize that our future lies in the education of our youth. Without that key factor, the ideals which all cherish will fall victim to mass misconception, and become no better than what much of America sees Hip Hop as. Now is the time.

Common, I was at a show that you did in
Virginia Beach, at a club called "Rouges".
Your set was cut off early because of
reasons that were out of your control.
I wanted to let you know that you gave
the crowd everything we came there to see
and more. I hope that experience doesn't
make you bitter towards doing shows in that
part of Va. I'm a diehard fan of yours, and
your music speaks from the heart, which is
something that I appreciate. Some artist don't
understand that it takes more courage to be
different. Songs like "This is me", are the
main things that fans want to know about the
artist they listen to. Thanks for giving us
what we've always wanted!!

I wish Common's personal evolution and his artistic expression thereof was contagious! I too am getting tired of hearing primarily niggadrama and bullshit: violence and hatred of women and fellow man, self-destruction...
I love hiphop, always have, always will. Still, I spend my loot with the Wisdom I Am. Lil Kim and Foxy Brown and some R&B songstress' get the finger and a fist for perpetuating the whorish goldigger mentality. Yes, my (excuse me) pussy is worth more than gold, and just because you got gold doesn't warrant the exchange...'gold' in that my physical self is valuable, women must preserve and honor themselves, and REQUIRE that men do the same. Preserve sisters, because if the woman goes (expires), who else to go but man?...Think about it!

All respect goes to Common, the dopest MC hip-hop will ever face. Even though the whole hip-hop scene has basically turned to bullshit, Com's seein through like a pager. One thing I've always loved about Common is the man has always been real, no fake gangsta stories or none of that shit. Just pure lyrics on the Urban Life. I'm feelin everything you have to say man. I just wish more people would get into the flow. But, fuck 'em, you know, I got everything you've ever came out with that I could get my hands on. "Can I Borrow A Dollar," "Resurrection," "Urban
Assault," "De La Soul, The Biz," "A.I.D.S.," "Soul In The Hole," and of course "One Day.." the day it hit the store.

Have you, The Roots, and Mos Def worked on goin' on tour together? Ya gonna be in NYC over the summer? Tramps? My bad on all the questions, you just keep the cabbage thinkin' and it would be nice to know where myself and the rest of the "Com-heads" can peep you live. Much respect and God Bless. PEACE!!

Common,
I just want to take the opportunity send you my blessings as an artist. You are by far the most incredibly talented hip-hop artist out there...always have been, and I believe will continue to be. I say all of this from another artists perspective. You have been a grand inspiration to my work as a hip-hop artist, and I hope that one day, i will be able to work with you. Keep it Soulful. One Love.

I was born and raised in the East and now I live in the Chi.
I've been hip-hop fiend since the day I HEARD the Sugarhill Gang on the radio. I've watched it soar, flail, and rise again. It it wasn't for artists like Common, Outkasts, the Fugees, Goodie MOb (and others in that vein), hip-hop would be doing a complete nose dive. What ever happened to originality, experimentation and daring to be different? Too many artists are selling their souls for the "paper chase". What happened to "keeping it real" to your music and your fans? I understand you gotta eat; but, I can't play most of what's out in front of my daughter. What type of legacy are we leaving to our kids? We had Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Al Green? We're leaving them such wholesome songs: Pushin' inside you.....Make crack like this. Common keep doing what ya doing. Hopefully artists such as yourself will be the rule and not just an exception. Peace God.

Part two on my commentary: I swear I be wanna slap kids in they mouth who talk about they "bout it, bout it." What the fuck are most of these kids about? About to flunk out of school? or better yet catch a crimial record?? We get lynched in the media for being negative and shit, but that's a lie and they know it. 1 muthafucka can mess it up for about 22000 othas at a show...what happened to battling on the spot and freestyles at live shows? I don't wanna see cats doing sorry-ass dancing on stage and pretty lights as they lip-sync. A live show ain't supposed to be like puttin on the hits...I know that DJs be out there, but why don't most muthafuckas want them on the stage scratching over cuts? Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Premier, Scratch, Red Alert, Clark Kent, Funkmaster Flex those are DJs who put on live shows with or w/o emcees. The pther day, somebody had the nerve to say they didn't like KRS and Rakim, but Puffy and Master P were the bomb; that almost broke my heart and again, I wanted to pimp-smack a muthafucka. Hopefully, a wack artist/album ban will be placed in effect before another sorry sucka makes it through the door, but I have a feeling it won't. So it's up to the fans and artists to keep it true and pass the knowledge to others to correct their confused mind state. By the way Comm, even though at times you might me off-beat, it's like you having a conversation with the people who listen to your shit in person, so your album is not really like a bunch of songs, it's a collection of your thoughts on certain topics at hand and your history...what some cultures in Africa call griots. A storyteller and keeper of history. Hopefully you'll still be around ten albums down the line. If you keep on keeping true to yourself, the blessings will flow and in your lyrics it'll show.

I am really in general disappointed at the state that hip-hop is in, and that state is emergency. With muthafuckas like Buffy and the Fad Boy cliques running around desecrating old hip-hop, rock and pop tracks just to make a buck, it's no wonder I don't listen to the radio anymore. Now while there are a few cats out there that keep shit real and are of a hip-hop and not a hip-pop mindstate(common, roots, tribe, Rakim, PE, Gang Starr, De La, etc.), most of these cats just wanna make a record and not a career for themselves...speaking of records, I wonder how many people in the game are truly cognizant to the true meaning of Industry Rule 4080(record company people are shady). Do they get contract lawyers to read over their contracts thoroughly, or are they just ready to do an LP and take a signing bonus without thinking about the consequences of their actions? Not to get long-winded on people out there, but it just makes no sense that the upright and lyrically tight are getting the least exposure, while whackness be on the radio and video 23 hours of the day. I don't know if Nas will read this or not, but he needs to get off the big-willie style and go back to that Illmatic-type flow. In my opinion, he's the heir-apparent of hip-hop and if album 3 is as tight as album one, I sense careers ending. If anyone agrees with me out there, hit me up at: soulbrono2
Peace

Hip hop is on a state of decline. With many artists making crazy "stupid" records, kids are buying poorly prepared products. What common does for me is beyond explanation; his work allows me to think, relax, as well as to evaluate my status in this society as a black man. Common makes things simple for me, his music is down to earth, while talking about stuff I can relate to/with/about. We all need to get on the "Common wave" and experience this rather Un-Common experience; He allows me to get a natural high due to his level of creativity and originality. Common is indeed the best in the business.

I've been a fan of hip hop from the start. A lil brother buying rap albums and staring at the covers trying to decipher the story that the photos told and how they related to the albums. Even listening to the lyrics while the vinyl spun and painting my personal picture of what it all meant.
Over the years, I've watched artists come and go and change their styles and image too many times to mention (see that nigga Ice Cube for an example).
Some way along the line, hip hop got lost. Going mainstream was good and all but itd the doors for a lot of people to come in with some real garbage posing it off like hip hop. Common is one of the few artists, and I mean that shit, artists, that treat hip hop like an art and not a way to get the two p's ( paycheck and some pussy). I mean this cat paints some vivid lyrical images, that make me turn on the camera in my head again like when I was 11. Then I bought the albums ALL OF EM, and I must say that ,"One Day..." is quite logically the finest body of work to date.
Common shares not only a peice of his mind, but similarily a piece of his soul with us. "Retrospect ..." really hits home with a lot of niggas and is probably the reason that niggas listen to Common, respect his style, but dont buy the shit. The same with De La Soul, the Roots, et al. Its not that the shit aint the bomb, its that all the forementioned groups come with honesty in their lyrics , they dont keep it real they keep it right! Unfortunately, the average wanna be Master P, fake pimp, wanna be playa, but dont know the rules nigga (lemme not forget the suburbanite crackers) that buys hip hop records now wanna get lost in a false reality as if they living the lyrics. Hip Hop aint about smackin hoes, its about flexin lyrical skills and you not talkin about bustin a cap, you talkinj about you bust flow betta than the next cat. Its about grabbin for verbs and nouns and ideologies and tyin them in your flow to make niggas listening say Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmnnn!
We lost that shit in hip hop and need to get it back or we will be seeing more groups like the insane clown posse around.
Common keep makin them records cuz ima keep kickin my $17.50 your way.
Peace
BiggStu
